On February 14, 2007, German paraglider Ewa Wiśnierska was training for the World Championships in New South Wales, Australia. Despite numerous weather warnings predicting violent thunderstorms, a determined Ewa secured herself into her glider while her team prepared to monitor her progress from their van below.
The first portion of her flight was calm but suddenly, two thunderstorm clouds materialized directly in her path. Despite frantic attempts to steer clear of their updraft, Ewa found herself drawn into the ascending current, propelling her at a speed of 77 km/h!
Amidst darkness and howling winds, the temperature plummeted to freezing cold. Eventually losing consciousness, Ewa became encased in ice, reaching an altitude of 9,946 meters. Suspended above the storm for 40 minutes in -45°C temperatures, the wing of her paraglider gave way under the weight of the ice, sending an unconscious Ewa into a terrifying free-fall towards Earth.
In a surprising turn of events, Ewa's paraglider mysteriously jerked open, abruptly waking her up. Three and a half hours after taking flight and in a rough condition, she somehow managed to navigate and safely land her glider in a farmer's field, 60 kilometers from her starting point.
Aside from some frostbite, Ewa emerged unharmed and was discharged from the hospital within hours.
