Clark Stanley was born in Abilene, Texas, in 1854.
After a decade working as a cowboy, he claimed to have spent two years learning from a Hopi medicine man in Arizona. During this time, Stanley claimed he was introduced to the medicinal properties of snake oil. Stanley began selling his own version of Snake Oil Liniment at medicine shows across America. A master showman, he dazzled audiences by killing snakes and mixing his potion on the spot, drawing crowds who paid 50 cents per bottle – equivalent to about $20 today. He boasted that his remedy could cure almost anything, from headaches and arthritis to sciatica. Known as the “Rattlesnake King,” Stanley eventually set up production facilities in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. However, in 1917, federal investigators intercepted a shipment of Stanley’s liniment and discovered it contained only mineral oil, a fatty oil, red pepper, and turpentine – no snake oil whatsoever. Stanley was fined $20 for "misbranding" his product as a pain remedy and faded into obscurity.
